Stadion Orła Warszawa – stadium description
When was the Orzeł Warszawa Stadium built?
The Orzeł Warszawa Stadium on Podskarbinska Street (the address is now Chrzanowskiego Street) was ceremonially opened on July 22, 1959. The facility stood a little north of the site where the old Orzeł Stadium had existed in the years 1928–1953 (the area was taken up to build blocks of flats). At the beginning of the 21st century, the modernisation of the facility, which had been underway since the 1990s, was completed, allowing it to meet IAAF requirements as an International Class II venue.
In mid-2023, a PLN 20 million worth upgrade of the stadium began. The work was completed in October 2024, and the stadium received, among other things, a new blue running track and seats of the same color, as well as floodlight masts.
What does the Orzeł Warszawa Stadium look like?
The stadium is a facility designed specifically for athletics. The synthetic running track has 8 tracks around the perimeter and 10 on the main straight. The stadium also features runways, throwing areas and other athletics equipment. Within the facility there is an administration building with a meeting room. Locker rooms equipped with lockers and showers are available.
The stadium has a seating capacity of 3,000. The covered main stand is located on the west side; on the other sides, the running track is surrounded by low, several-row stands, and four lighting masts stand in the corners. Behind the main stand, there are tennis courts and, a little further away, the neglected "Nowe Dynasy" cycling track.
What happens at the Orzeł Warszawa Stadium?
The facility is managed by the Praga Południe District Sports and Leisure Center. In the past, it was hosted by the athletes of the now defunct Orzeł club. The stadium has hosted many athletics competitions, including the international Pedro's Cup (2006, 2007) and the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial (2011, 2012, 2013), with the participation of world-renowned athletes, including world record-holder in the 100-meter run Asafa Powell.
In addition to championships, amateur competitions and sports training, the stadium hosts a variety of outdoor events such as concerts, shows, picnics and corporate events. It is interesting to note that scenes for the film "Miś" directed by Stanisław Bareja were filmed in the former club building. In the office of the chairman of the board, coach Wacław Jarząbek sang the famous "łubu dubu ...".
