Canad Inns Stadium – historical stadium description
When opened for the first time, the Polo Park stadium could hold 15,700 people, but needed expansion soon after with demand soaring. Already after a year first upgrade took place, then a new north end was erected in 1966. Stands along the field were expanded with upper tiers in 1972 (west) and 1978 (east).
Capacity peak was reached in 1987 at 33,675, but following years saw the size decrease with seat installation and then replacement with wider seats in some sections. Still, the 1991 Grey Cup managed to gather over 51,000 people inside the ground.
Called simply Winnipeg Stadium until 2000, the ground was renamed Canad Inns Stadium after a naming rights deal was reached with the hotel chain. That names remained in place until May 2013, when demolition of the stadium began. A piece-by-piece process saw the stadium disappear after three months.
