Estadio Villa Alegre – historical stadium description

The former Estadio Villa Alegre had existed since the 1960s. The facility had two small stands, one along the pitch, on the west side, and another, behind the goal, on the south side. The capacity of the stadium was 5,000 spectators. The facility was located close to the banks of the Parana River and the centre of Encarnación.

On a daily basis, the stadium served the local Liga Encarnacena competition. In 1997, it was also the venue for part of the matches (all Group A matches) of the South American Under-17 Football Championship.

Due to the construction of the Yaciretá dam, part of the coastal areas of the city were earmarked for flooding. Although the stadium was not directly in an area that was going to be under water, the decision was made to decommission it. The last match was played there on October 24, 2008, and demolition was carried out in 2010.

As a replacement for the old stadium, construction of a brand new, much larger stadium, also named Estadio Villa Alegre, began in 2016 in the Chaipé district. Its inauguration took place on November 4, 2022, and the Copa Paraguay final was played on the opening day.
