BC Place – tournament stadium description
What will BC Place be called during the 2026 World Cup?
At the time of writing this text, there is no information about BC Place changing its name due to hosting the 2026 World Cup, and such a change is unlikely to occur. BC is short for British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada.
What changes will need to be made at BC Place before the 2026 World Cup?
BC Place will require extensive renovation before hosting the 2026 World Cup. The first phase of renovations scheduled for 2024 will include VIP suites and hospitality space upgrades, modernization of food outlets, restroom and elevator renovations. In 2025, the renovation efforts will expand to include a banquet hall and lounge, locker rooms, a souvenir shop, premium entrance, and a connection to the Parq hotel and casino.
Additionally, adjustments will certainly be needed to meet FIFA requirements. Prior to the tournament, all stadiums will undergo testing to ensure they meet FIFA's detailed standards for such a large-scale event. Changes made to the facilities may involve upgrading the playing surface, improving seating areas, enhancing accessibility, and updating stadium technology and security systems to meet international FIFA standards.
How will BC Place be used for the 2026 World Cup?
BC Place will host five group stage matches scheduled for June 13, 18, 21, 24, and 26. The venue will host two matches involving the Canadian national team and one match featuring the USA. Additionally, a Round of 32 match will take place on July 2, and it will serve as the venue for Round of 16 matches on July 7.
What hours will the 2026 World Cup games at BC Place be broadcast?
The 2026 World Cup matches at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, are likely to be played at 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, and 21:00 local time (Pacific Time). Converting these times to UK time (BST), the matches will be available for viewing at 20:00, 23:00, 02:00, and 05:00 the following day. Where is BC Place, the 2026 World Cup stadium, located?
BC Place, the 2026 World Cup stadium, is located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The venue is situated in downtown Vancouver at 777 Pacific Boulevard. Due to its central location, BC Place is easily accessible to both city residents and visitors, with convenient transportation connections including SkyTrain and buses.
What features characterize BC Place, the 2026 World Cup stadium?
Opened on June 19, 1983, BC Place originally featured an air-supported dome roof, then the largest of its kind worldwide. On January 5, 2007, snow accumulated on the roof despite strict guidelines against ice accumulation and structural warnings regarding ice accumulation. Accumulation caused the ETFE fabric cover of the roof to tear near Gate G on the south side where the roof meets the top of the concrete basin. The tear quickly grew as air escaped through it, and maintenance staff deliberately controlled the release of air to preserve the integrity of the undamaged roof fabric panels. No one was injured during the incident, although rain and melted snow flooded the basin and therefore had to be pumped.
After the Winter Olympics in 2010, it was closed for 16 months as part of a comprehensive revitalization centered on replacing the inflated roof with a retractable roof, supported by lines. After completion of the construction, the stadium's new roof was also the largest of its kind. Upgraded stadium also has the second largest centrally-hung high-resolution scoreboard in North America, after the one at AT&T Stadium.
