Metalist Stadium – tournament stadium description
History of this Benue reaches back to 1926, when it was built next to local tractor factory. Everything has changed since then, though. First in late 1960’s when the stadium was completely rebuilt. Parts of that ground exist even today, but only as historical monuments integrated into an otherwise modern stadium. Despite Kharkiv being a strong contender to host Euro 2012 with its solid infrastructure, the stadium was another advantage.
Plans to redevelop it were existent already when Poland and Ukraine were chosen as host countries and reconstruction ended already in 2009, when some cities were just starting their projects. Moreover, this venue didn’t put public budget at risk as it was privately-founded by Oleksandr Jaroslavsky, the owner of Metalist football club. Most distinctive feature of the stadium after redevelopment are “spider legs” – roof elements reaching well over the stadium itself.
