Danzhou Sports Center Stadium – stadium description
How was Danzhou Sports Center built?
Construction of the new sports complex in Danzhou on Hainan Island began in 2019, with China Construction First Bureau as the main contractor. The complex was being built as the main arena for the 6th Hainan Provincial Games, to be held in 2022. The facilities were completed in May 2022 and the first event was a basketball tournament, played in the sports hall on May 13-15. The cost of building the compound was 1.46 billion yuan.
The first major event, however, was the provincial games competition. The main part of these, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was postponed until December 2022. The opening ceremony, which was also the first major test for the new stadium, took place on December 10, 2022. Athletics competitions and football matches were also held at the stadium as part of the Games.
What are the characteristics of Danzhou Sports Center?
The Danzhou Sports Center was built on a rectangular plot of land designated on the eastern outskirts of the city. The three main facilities of the complex are a multi-purpose stadium, a sports hall with a capacity of over 5,000 spectators and an indoor swimming pool with an auditorium for 1,000 people.
The complex also includes a training track, small football practice pitches and multi-purpose fields and tennis courts, ancillary buildings, as well as paths, squares, access roads, car parks and green areas. The stadium is encircled by an elevated promenade that connects it to the indoor sports hall.
The architecture of the complex draws on the coastal landscape of the Yangpu Peninsula (located about 50 km north-west of the city), in particular the unique, more than 1,000-year-old sea salt extraction site and the scenery of the coastal Longmen rocks.
What does Danzhou Sports Centre complex stadium look like?
The stadium of the complex has a blue tartan athletics track, surrounded by stands that can accommodate 30,000 spectators. Divided into tiers and taller than the others, the main stand is located on the west side. Two video screens have been placed on the arches. The stands are equipped with folding plastic seats in red.
The auditorium is covered by a roof with floodlights. On the outside, the stands are covered by an openwork façade made up of 9072 translucent panels in light blue, dark blue and white.
