Spain: Lamp posts, the only thing left of the old Romareda All that remains of the magical nights at La Romareda after its 68 years of history are the memories of the fans and the poles that used to light up the pitch. The demolition work is nearing completion, outpacing the work calendar by two weeks.

The poles, the last thing left

It is not common in Spain for deviations from the construction schedule to mean being in advance (ask the architects of the Nou Mestalla or the Camp Nou). But in Zaragoza that is no cause for celebration, as the works that are going 2 weeks faster than planned are the demolitions of the legendary La Romareda.

The only thing that reminds us that the rubble field on Paseo de Isabel la Católica was still a few months ago the temple of Real Zaragoza and not just any building are the lightposts. But their stay on the site of what in a few years will be the New Romareda is also coming to an end: in the next few days they will be dismantled, shortened and moved to the modular stadium in the Parking Norte.

According to Periódico de Aragón, the proper construction of the new stadium will begin at the end of September with the foundations of the East and Preferencia stands, following in the footsteps of the works carried out in Gol Sur, which started already in July 2024.

A green stadium

Meanwhile, the design of the New Romareda received the Breeam ES certificate, which testifies that the stadium will be eco-friendly, one of the requirements for the 2030 World Cup. The stadium authorities boast that the stadium will have an annual energy surplus of 60 MWh, will save 40-50% more water than similar facilities and its green environment will absorb 4 tonnes of CO2 each year.
