Matsumoto Stadium – stadium description
Most import ant football-specific stadium in Matsumoto was built in 2001. It was time of pre-World-Cup preparations for Japan and after opening this venue was selected as training base for Paraguay national team.
Due to close proximity with the municipal airport (just over 300 meters), the stadium had to be partly sunken, some 10 meters into the ground. East stand also couldn’t have a proper roof due to height limit for landing planes, receiving just a steel platform for floodlights.
Day-to-day use is provided by Matsumoto Yamaga, but on various occasions also other J.League teams have played host here: Vissel Kobe, Urawa Reds, JEF United, Thespa Kusatsu or FC Tokyo, to name some. Also, national teams of Columbia, Peru, Montenegro and Czech Republic played here while taking part in the commercial Kirin Cup tournament.
