Gəncə Stadionu – stadium description
The old City Stadium in Ganja was opened in 1964; however, by the 21st century it was in very poor technical condition, and for a long time discussions had been ongoing about its comprehensive modernization.
Ultimately, it was decided to completely demolish the stadium and build a modern, football-specific arena in its place. The stadium was closed in 2023, and following its demolition construction of its successor began.
The cornerstone for the new facility was laid on 9 April 2024 by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The investment cost exceeded 15 million manats. The stadium was inaugurated on 27 September 2025, also by President Aliyev.
One day after the opening, the 3rd CIS Games began (held from 28 September to 8 October 2025). Azerbaijan hosted the event, and the new stadium in Ganja served as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The stadium is expected to be ready to host football matches only in spring 2026, when Kapaz PFK will move in. Due to the redevelopment, the club has been playing its home matches outside the city.
The stadium has a rectangular, football-specific design and a capacity of 15,343 spectators. The stands are fully covered, and the exterior of the building is clad with an attractive, airy façade made of vertical fins. The facility is equipped with modern technologies, includes VIP boxes and full supporting infrastructure, and meets the requirements of UEFA Category 4.
The surrounding complex includes training pitches, a football academy building, and parking areas. The facility is located at a short distance from the railway station in Ganja.
