From the 1964 municipal stadium to a modern arena
The old City Stadium in Ganja was opened in 1964 and for decades served as the city’s main football venue. However, in the 21st century its technical condition deteriorated significantly. Although long-term modernization was considered, authorities ultimately decided to demolish the old structure and build a completely new stadium in the same location.
The facility was closed in 2023, and after demolition work began on a new investment. The cornerstone was laid on 9 April 2024 in the presence of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The project cost exceeded 15 million Azerbaijani manats. The official opening ceremony took place on 27 September 2025, also attended by the head of state.

Already one day after the inauguration, on 28 September 2025, the 3rd CIS Games began, lasting until 8 October. Azerbaijan hosted the event, and the new stadium in Ganja served as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies. From the very beginning of its history, the facility was therefore integrated into an event of international significance.
