Spain: 2028 Champions League final in Madrid? Cívitas Metropolitano is eager to host another Champions League final. Atlético Madrid's stadium was already the venue for this prestigious club football match in 2019, when Liverpool and Tottenham met in the Spanish capital. UEFA representatives were very pleased with the organization of that event.

Stepping out of Santiago Bernabéu's shadow

Despite the massive influx of English fans from both teams to the capital, the event was a huge organizational success and a significant source of revenue for the entire city of Madrid. Besides the mentioned 2019 final, the Spanish capital has hosted the decisive event of the former European Cup or current Champions League four other times: in 1957, 1969, 1980, and 2010. However, it was mainly the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu that was chosen to host these events. Now, a sixth final in Madrid could mean that Cívitas Metropolitano will be the venue for this crucial match for the second time.

Federation is impressed

UEFA has already announced that Puskás Aréna in Budapest will host the final in 2026, and the following year, the match could take place in Milan, although federation representatives are still waiting for a renovation plan for San Siro. The situation in Italy is currently so complicated that no scenario can be ruled out. Madrid, however, is patiently waiting and has submitted its candidacy for 2028. According to Spanish media, Atlético's stadium has a good chance of hosting the Champions League final again, thanks to the positive impression from 2019. The European federation is not indifferent to the expansion of the stadium's capacity, which can now hold 70,460 spectators.

We have submitted a proposal and now we will wait for UEFA's decision. Honestly, I think there is no other stadium in Europe like Cívitas Metropolitano, said Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético, during a recent MadCup gala.
