Excelsior Stadium – stadium description
It was built for Airdrieonians FC who aspired and manager to advance to the Scottish Premier League. But since league requirements were set at minimum 10,000 seats, their former Broomfield Park had to be switched. The club sold it in 1994 to a supermarket chain and finished construction of the new ground in 1998 (thus the nick New Broomfield).
However the move proved to be the last part of Airdrieonians’ history with the club going bankrupt in 2002. A new club was then launched with the name of Airdrie United. It also doesn’t manage at the new ground too well with all-time high at less than 6,000 people, with Airdrieonians’ best at almost 9,000.
Record attendance for the ground was set at a game of clubs from out of town when Hamilton Accies matched St. Mirren in the Challenge Cup final. This wasn’t the only significant event at the stadium with Queen of the South and St. Mirren playing their European campaigns here due to their grounds being insufficient.
