Gewiss Stadium – stadium description

What does Atalanta Bergamo's stadium look like in a nutshell?

Atalanta Bergamo's stadium was built in 1928, and received its current rectangular form thanks to a reconstruction carried out between 2019 and 2024. The facility has retained some original elements from 1928, such as the historic façades of the old stands and the reinforced concrete roof over the main stand.

The stadium can hold 24,950 spectators and is among the most modern in Italy. It is hosted and owned by Atalanta Bergamo. Under a sponsorship agreement, the facility is named Gewiss Stadium as of 2019.

When was Atalanta Bergamo's stadium built?

Atalanta Bergamo's stadium was built in 1928. The facility initially had an athletics track and two stands, including the main stand, which had a reinforced concrete canopy, innovative for the time.

The facility has been expanded over the years: a solid reinforced concrete grandstand on the southern curve was built in 1958, and a similar stand on the opposite side was completed in the early 1970s. In 1984 additional metal stands occupied the place of the running track, and in 1991 the rebuilt eastern stand also received a canopy.

How was the “new” Atalanta Bergamo stadium built?

In the spring of 2017, Atalanta bought the stadium from the city with the intention of extensively rebuilding it. The stadium, in its current form, was already outdated and unsuitable for a Serie A team, and on top of that, it did not meet the requirements of the European competition in which Atalanta was soon to compete regularly.

Indeed, the time of the stadium's reconstruction coincided with the best period in Atalanta's history so far. In 2016, the team's coach became Gian Piero Gasperini, under whose leadership the club, from a team struggling to remain in Serie A, transformed into one of the top football clubs in the country, also of significance in European competitions (in 2024 Atalanta won the Europa League).

What was the plan for Atalanta Bergamo's stadium redevelopment?

The stadium redevelopment project was prepared by De8 Architetti studio. The plan was to eliminate the curves (Curva Nord and Curva Sud) and replace them with new stands, located just behind the pitch. The facility was to gain a rectangular, football-specific layout as a result. In addition, an underground parking lot was to be built in the southern part of the stadium.

The renovation was also to include stands along the pitch, but due to their historic nature they were to retain much of their existing form and historic façades, as well as the reinforced concrete roof over the main stand. Because they could not be expanded, the new stands behind the goals were to be taller to increase the capacity of the entire stadium to around 25,000 spectators.

When was the reconstruction of Atalanta Bergamo's stadium carried out?

Work began at the end of April 2019, with the new north stand being the first to be built and opened to fans as early as October 6, 2019.

In the summer of 2020, the east stand was modernized: the auditorium was completely rebuilt, but part of the structure was preserved, including the historic façade.

In 2023–2024, the stand behind the south goal was rebuilt (the start of this work was slightly delayed compared to the original plans). The construction of the new Curva Sud was more complicated than the construction of the stand on the opposite side, as an underground parking lot was planned underneath it (as well as under the plaza directly in front of the stand).

The new stand opened to spectators for the first time on September 15, 2024, although finishing work continued for some time. The roof over the main grandstand was also repaired in 2024. Longitudinal trusses connecting the new stands behind the goals were also built above the old stands, with floodlights mounted on them.

All the work was carried out between 2019 and 2024, with the cost of the reconstruction totaling more than €100 million. This gave Atalanta Bergamo's stadium a completely new look and placed it among the most modern in Italy.

What does Atalanta Bergamo's stadium look like?

The stadium, after the 2019–2024 reconstruction, has a rectangular, football-specific layout. The stands along the pitch still retain some of the original 1928 structure, including the historic façades and the reinforced concrete roof on the main stand.

The main stand is located on the west side. In its lower part is a special, exclusive premium sector with heating and catering for about 400 spectators, built in 2015. The ornamentation in the underside of the roof also draws attention.

The stands behind the goals are noticeably higher, covered by a massive metal structure clad with panels in shades of gray and blue. Two longitudinal trusses are stretched between these stands, on which lighting spotlights are mounted.

The stadium can accommodate 24,950 spectators, and the stands are equipped with folding, mostly dark blue seats. Among other things, the facility has two video screens, and there is underground parking under the south stand and under the plaza directly in front of that stand.

The visitors' sector is located in the southwest corner of the stadium. The home of Atalanta's most fervent ultras is the north stand.

Where is Atalanta Bergamo's stadium located?

The facility is located in the northern part of Bergamo. It is surrounded by residential housing, as well as a former lazaretto building from the 16th century and a factory specializing in wire production (Mazzoleni Trafilerie Bergamasche).

What is the name of Atalanta Bergamo's stadium?

As of July 1, 2019, the facility is named Gewiss Stadium, thanks to a sponsorship agreement with Gewiss. Gewiss is a company based near Bergamo that offers products and services in the electrical engineering industry.

The stadium was formerly named Campo polisportivo Mario Brumana (1928–1945), Stadio Comunale (1945–1994) and Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia (1994–2019).

What are the names of the various stands in Atalanta Bergamo's stadium?

The main (west) stand at Atalanta's stadium is simply called Tribuna Centrale, while the east stand opposite has been called Tribuna Rinascimento since 2020 (formerly called Tribuna Giulio Cesare, and Tribuna UBI from 2017–2020).

The stands behind the goals are named after two Atalanta players who died prematurely: the north stand (Curva Nord) has been named after Federico Pisani (Curva Pisani) since 1997, and the south stand (Curva Sud) was named after Piermario Morosini (Curva Morosini) in 2012.
