Estadio Municipal de Chapín – stadium description
The stadium was opened in June 1988 as the largest venue for football and athletics in the city of Jerez de la Frontera. At the time of opening it wasn’t completely ready, though, seeing final touches happening later into 1988.
With running track included from the start this stadium had interestingly designed stands, shaped like two capital ‘J’ – having two corners empty. Only the main grandstand was covered at that time.
The situation changed in 2002, when Cruz y Ortiz architect team took over to redesign it completely. Though all stands were left untouched, the stadium’s image is nothing like the previous one. New roof and cladding changed the appearance ahead of World Equestrian Games held in Jerez.
The two empty corners were filled with additional buildings, one of them being a high-profile hotel with part of the rooms overlooking the pitch.
