Athlone Stadium – stadium description

The stadium was built in 1972 in Athlone district of Cape Town, from which it takes the name. For decades it's been host to games of two biggest teams in the city, Ajax and Santos.

Before 2010 World Cup it was to be completely rebuilt with all four stands covered. However the project, worth ZAR 300 million, wasn't carried out fully with end stands left uncovered and one built in less than half capacity.
