On Tuesday morning, precisely at 9:00 a.m., one of the most important stages in the modernisation of the Benito Villamarín Stadium began. The demolition of the lower section of the Preferencia stand as well as the external staircases located between the Preferencia and Gol Sur stands got underway.

Two seasons at La Cartuja
The redevelopment of Benito Villamarín has forced the club to move its home matches to the Estadio La Cartuja. Betis have already made their debut there, winning 1–0 against Alavés, but soon came their first taste of defeat – a 1–2 loss to Athletic. Now Manuel Pellegrini’s team faces three consecutive home fixtures at La Cartuja following Sunday’s away match against Levante in Ciutat de València. In the coming weeks Betis will host Real Sociedad, Nottingham Forest and Osasuna in Seville.

A new era for Benito Villamarín
Alongside the dismantling of the stand, work is also underway to remove and recover stadium elements that can be reused. In recent days the company Erri-Berri has been preparing the site for demolition, sorting and securing materials from the existing stands.
The removal of the lower part of the Preferencia stand and the external staircases are among the most spectacular elements of the first stage of redevelopment. It is also a clear signal to supporters that the club has entered the decisive phase of the investment. Real Betis plan to play at La Cartuja as hosts for at least two full seasons so that work on the new Benito Villamarín can proceed without disruption.
