Italy: Work on Milan stadium will start in August. Protest by university professors The AC Milan authorities are embarking on a stadium offensive and are seriously embarking on construction at San Donato Milanese. It has been announced that the construction site will be fenced off as early as next month. At the same time, academics have written a letter to FIFA and UEFA explaining why the stadium should not be built.

Closer and closer to starting construction

In the coming weeks, the area in San Donato Milanese earmarked for AC Milan's new stadium will be fenced off. Work will begin in August and be completed in September. Protection of the site includes 1,500 metres of fencing made of metal panels on concrete bases to prevent illegal entrances to the construction site, especially around the neglected Cascina San Francesco, often occupied by people linked to drugs. The measures are the result of cooperation between Milan, the municipality of San Donato and local authorities.

The newspaper Il Cittadino writes that the information comes from the municipality of San Donato Milanese, according to a communiqué from the company SportLifeCity, 90% owned by the Rossoneri club. The same communiqué reports that a deed of commitment has already been signed with Autostrade for the work in the buffer zone. The contract with the company that will carry out the work will be signed in mid-July and then it will be three weeks until the fence is installed.

Once the clean-up work has been completed, Milan has confirmed and started preparations for the installation of the fence, which is an important security measure for an area that is in a state of decay and, as is well known, frequented for a long time by people linked to drug trafficking - Councillor Massimiliano Mistretta commented.

Protest by university teachers

No to construction in San Donato was the title of a letter from more than 70 academics to Infantino, Ceferin and other high-ranking officials at FIFA and UEFA. The combined forces of several universities, notably Cattolica, Statale and Politecnico di Milano, wrote a protest against the construction of the new arena, presenting very interesting arguments.

The professors demand that the institution take a clear position against the construction of new infrastructure on undeveloped land. The argumentation focuses on environmental issues and the impact that the construction of the stadium would have, especially if it involves the loss of natural soil. The issue is that the new stadium that Milan would like to build would be built in an agricultural area.

The letter states that scientists wish to take the opposite position in order not to compromise the principles of sustainability that inspire global strategies to combat climate change. The construction of a new stadium in San Donato Milanese would lead to a significant increase in carbon emissions. To compensate for the environmental damage, 19 hectares of forest and 32,000 trees would need to be planted, you can read in the letter.
