Germany: Holstein Kiel prepares for stadium modernization. Voting on the best option underway Holstein Kiel is preparing for the redevelopment of its stadium. The Kiel municipal government will soon decide whether to approve the content of the public tender. If approved, interested companies will be able to bid for the project. The competition is expected to be concluded by the end of this year at the latest.

Three options in consideration

Currently, there are three possible redevelopment options for the Holstein Kiel stadium. The final choice among these three planning approaches will depend on feasibility and cost, with the renovation capped at a maximum of 75 million €. The portal kn-online.de has created a poll where fans can vote for their preferred option. We are most pleased with the fact that the team has secured promotion to the Bundesliga. Which vision is the best?

Option one involves rotating the pitch by 90 degrees and constructing a new main stand in the first phase of construction, in the area currently occupied by the most passionate fans. These fans would then have to move to the southern stand.

Option two keeps the pitch in its current location, which is certainly the least demanding solution. However, architects would need to leave the northeastern corner of the stadium open due to stringent zoning restrictions. Even in the northwest, the stadium would not be completely enclosed due to limited space. However, a large box modeled after the current craftsmen's stand at the Holstein stadium – a closed space for about 200 standing guests – could be envisioned.

Option three involves shifting the pitch to the southwest towards the existing sports hall. The advantage of this solution is that stands could be built in every corner of the stadium, making Holstein Stadium a fully enclosed football arena, similar to the option with the rotated pitch.

The downside of this option is that several existing stands would be affected by demolition in the first phase of the investment, significantly reducing the stadium's capacity. Kiel does not intend to relocate to an alternative stadium during the construction work. Moreover, the adjacent Holsteinhalle sports hall would need to be demolished much earlier than originally planned.

Staying at home

One thing is clear: regardless of which option is ultimately chosen, matches at Holstein Stadium will continue during the construction period. The club’s head of sports made this clear. Due to the burden on two clubs, the alternative stadium would not be Hamburg, but Hanover – and in my opinion, this is unacceptable for Holstein Kiel. The city of Kiel, which owns the stadium, hopes the modernization will begin at the start of the 2025/26 season.
