(Not) the first Euros in Germany

Germany will host the 2024 European Football Championship, after being selected to host the 17th UEFA European Championship at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Nyon on September 27, 2018. Türkiye was the only other country to apply to host Euro 2024. West Germany hosted the 1988 edition, but this will be the first time Germany has hosted the UEFA European Championship since reunification. The 2006 FIFA World Cup was also held in the country.

The opening match of Euro 2024 will take place on June 1, 2024. Germany will play against the Scots. The meeting will take place at one of the more modern stadiums in the world, Allianz Arena. The final will take place on July 14 at Olympiastadion in Berlin - the arena has already hosted matches such as the Champions League final in 2015.

UEFA tournament neutrality rules

UEFA's stadium naming rules for major tournaments such as the Euros aim to avoid conflicts related to commercial sponsorship and ensure neutrality. For Euro 2024, UEFA is mandating that stadiums with corporate-sponsored names revert to a more neutral naming format, which typically refers to a city or generic name. This policy aims to prevent conflicts with UEFA's own sponsorship agreements and to maintain a clear and consistent branding strategy throughout the tournament.

For example, Allianz Arena in Munich will be called Munich Football Arena and Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund will be known as BVB Stadion Dortmund during the tournament. Other stadiums, such as RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne, will be referred to as Cologne Stadium. This change ensures that none of the commercial sponsors of the stadiums will overshadow the official sponsors of the UEFA tournament itself.
