Spain: Does roof on Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán look like sink? Last December, Sevilla FC unveiled the preliminary design for the new Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium. In this visualization, significant attention was drawn to the new rectangular-shaped roof, which Del Nido Benavente compared to a sink. This sparked a wave of criticism, memes, and other humorous comparisons.

Like protective umbrella

The design for the new stadium is the work of IDOM, the same studio that handled the design of the new San Mamés. The roof was the biggest issue in Bilbao, primarily due to the high temperatures inside the venue. Considering Seville's weather conditions, studies indicated that the best solution would be for the new Sánchez-Pizjuán roof to have different shades.

Efforts were made to construct the roof to function as an umbrella both inside and outside the stadium. The width of the roof will not only provide protection from the sun and rain inside but also offer better conditions in the Gol Sur stand, ensuring fans can enjoy comfort whether it’s hot or cold. For San Mamés, the roof could not be expanded as precisely due to temperature and ventilation issues.

Another important aspect of the rectangular shape of the Sánchez-Pizjuán roof is preventing the greenhouse effect caused by some domes, such as San Mamés. The Seville stadium's covering allows for air circulation since it is not completely enclosed. It has been known for several years that the foundations of the old structure would not support the creation of a third tier during renovations.

Seeking funding

According to Muchodeporte, the club will finance the new stadium from additional funds generated by the stadium itself. Seville is indeed applying for a €108 million loan, but it will not be allocated for this investment. The currently considered option is project financing, which means long-term payment. The debt and equity used to finance the stadium project are repaid from the cash flows generated by the project itself.
