Spain: Actions not words! Metropolitano with environmental initiative Reducing CO2, renewable energy sources and electric cars. Sound familiar? Of course, as such solutions are becoming increasingly fashionable and popular. Along with this trend, the authorities at Atletico Madrid have also followed this course and, with the help of Graphenstone, have created a project that is unique in Europe, improving the air quality within the arena.

”Breathing” stadium

In recent weeks, work has been carried out to repaint the Metropolitano's facade. Paint and sustainable development? That was the idea that Miguel Ángel Arjona, CEO of Graphenstone had in mind when creating the breathable coating. Used in construction as well as in Zara Home shops, it has also found its place in the red and white part of Madrid.

12,000 litres, 70,000 cubic metres to cover, i.e. the equivalent of about 10 football pitches and thousands of employees. What benefits will this offer? In the process of drying the paint, it will absorb an untold amount of carbon dioxide estimated at 4,100 tonnes, the equivalent of 70 000 trees a day. The figures are impressive. Especially as the air quality in the area around the stadium and Madrid's M-40 motorway ring road will be significantly improved.

Graphenstone's product will also bring practical benefits from its use. The prevention of surface rot will help the club authorities to maintain the facility. Smart paint will save energy through its high light reflectivity. Surprisingly, fans watching Los Rojiblancos at the stadium will feel the changes for themselves. Through the presence of graphene fibres, the reverberation of the stands will be eliminated so that the sound experience of the fans will certainly be enhanced.

Green sponsor helps club authorities

The main sponsor of Los Colchoneros is the Civitas company, which includes Graphenstone, a business that focuses on natural plastic coverings. Many awards in the fields of sustainability, innovation and architecture are a short list of credits for the world's most certified painting brand.

All our materials are certified by the European Union, and our commitment to sustainability and the environment is confirmed by the most strict and internationally recognised certifications and quality marks - says Miguel Ángel Arjona in a proud voice.

Atletico is not falling behind when it comes to this kind of solutions and the collaboration with an established concern is certainly not in vain. The attention has also been directed to the club's facilities, and the club's policy aims to be a reference point for other Spanish and European clubs in terms of environmental sustainability.

Civitas Metropolitano as front runner for innovation

It is worth mentioning that the Atleti management already had a successful history of extraordinary solutions leading to the calling of their stadium the most intelligent in the world. It should be mentioned that the arena, which was founded in 2017, has already had no problems with the implementation of modern technologies within the perimeter of its complex.

Connection is one of the strong points of the arena in eastern Madrid. Visiting the club museum, being in the business area you are certain that you will not be cut off from the world. 3G, 4G and, in the future, the fastest 5G internet, 6,700 network connections and 900 TVs - this you will encounter on your way. Amazingly, Metropolitano is equipped with 1 Wi-Fi access point per 40 fans. For example, the stadium itself has enough telephone network receivers to be used by everyone in the Girona city at the same time.

Metropolitano like Qatar's super stadiums

Do you remember the beautiful light show during the World Cup in Qatar? Los Rojiblancos experience this before every match. LED spotlights are used not only to illuminate the sporting spectacle, but also the colourful red and white light shows. Enhanced by the music of Rosendo Mercado's 'Maneras de Vivir' from the band Leño, it creates a sense of a fantastic show before the match itself. An arena ideal for a maximum football game experience. And who knows what new and innovative things Civitas Metropolitano will surprise us with in a year, maybe two...
