Residents of China are proud of their new venue. The ultra-modern Danzhou Sports Center Stadium made it to the list of 36 football arenas nominated for the prestigious Stadium of the Year 2022 award. The competition is the largest public vote of its kind in the world. Since the first edition began, a total of more than 400,000 valid votes have been counted.

This year’s contest is highly varied, with stadiums from as many as six different continents taking part: 18 venues are from Asia, 8 from Europe, 4 from Africa, 3 from North America, 2 from South America and 1 from Australia and Oceania. Get to know Danzhou Sports Center Stadium

Construction of the new sports complex in Danzhou on Hainan Island began in 2019, with China Construction First Bureau as the main contractor. The complex was being built with the 6th Hainan Provincial Games in mind, to be held in 2022. The facilities were completed in May 2022. The opening ceremony of the event, which was also the first major test for the new stadium, took place on December 10, 2022. Athletics competitions and football matches were also held at the stadium as part of the Games. Here are some interesting facts about the arena

  • The stadium of the complex has a blue tartan athletics track, surrounded by stands that can accommodate 30,000 spectators.
  • The main facilities of the complex apart from the stadium are a sports hall with a capacity of over 5,000 spectators and an indoor swimming pool with an auditorium for 1,000 people.
  • The architecture of the complex draws on the coastal landscape of the Yangpu Peninsula in particular the unique, more than 1,000-year-old sea salt extraction site and the scenery of the coastal Longmen rocks.
  • On the outside, the stands of the stadium are covered by an openwork façade made up of 9072 translucent panels in light blue, dark blue and white.
