USA: Austin FC fans have done it again! Since the franchise joined the ranks of Major League Soccer in 2021, the supporters from Texas have filled the stadium to its capacity on every occasion during home matches. This is the longest active streak in the entire league. The result? The Western Conference final… and hungry for more!

Austin FC is a soccer club based in the capital of the state of Texas and also its fourth most populous city (nearly one million inhabitants). Since joining the MLS in 2021, the team has played its matches at the 20,738-seat Q2 Stadium, which was also nominated in our annual Stadium of the Year competition. In the latest edition, he came in last, in 23rd place. Perhaps if voters had realized that attendance at this stadium would be so high, they would have changed their mind?

The newly formed Austin FC was granted a 20-year lease of the 24-acre site in 2019, with the option of extension up to three times, each time by 10 years. Annual rent of $550,000 is applicable starting year six, although the operator also has to make a sizable contribution to the city’s transit system. In return, Austin received a major league team with a modern stadium, expected to boost the local economy and the city’s image.

And that's exactly what happened, although no one thought it would escalate so quickly. In just their second season playing in the MLS, Austin FC reached the Western Conference final, beating Real Salt Lake and Dallas FC along the way, and before that - finishing the regular season in 2nd place in the conference, as well as 4th overall. To be honest, both fans and players, most notably the Argentinian striker Sebastian Driussi, are in brilliant form. Will ‘The Oaks’ reach the grand final for the first time in their history? The final regular season game against the Colorado Rapids was the 34th consecutive match with a full house in the stands at Q2 Stadium. Adding the two play-off games, the streak is now at 36. That's a great result, and the longest active series in MLS, but it doesn't equal the achievement of Sporting KC supporters, who have set a sellout record at 125 games in a row at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

We’re fortunate in the sense that all of our matches sell out and all of our matches are staged as big events with high show rates, which all produce large crowds. - says Andy Loughnane, club’s president. My goal back [in 2018] was that we would have a team that would bring the city together, - adds Austin mayor Steve Adler. And it’s done that. You find people walking down the street with not a lot in common other than they live here and they’re both wearing an Austin FC Kit.
