Finally the construction of the new sports center in Helmond will commence. Sportpark De Braak is planned to be opened in 2023.
The construction of the new stadium for Helmond Sport as well as the sports and education campus at its site has been planned for some time now. Recently it has been announced that the demolition of the old stadium and then the construction of the new sports center will start this November.
The city municipals are very enthusiastic about the whole undertaking, as alderman Harrie van Dijk stated asked about the oncoming works:
- “Yes, it's really time [...] It will be a place where people can work together on the future of Helmond Sport.”
The whole plan is to built not only the stadium, but also an entire campus and school, with the stadium in its centre. It is to become the city’s center for education, sports and recreation.©MoederscheimMoonen Architects
What is also worth mentioning is that according to alderman van Dijk, the first match on the field is to be played in 2023 and not, as it was originally planned, in 2024. The stadium will be built at the site of its predecessor, Lavans Stadion, inaugurated in 1967.
Paul Metzemaekers, rector of Ons Middelbaar Onderwijs in Helmond commented with enthusiasm on the matter:
- “The Helmond Sport players will come to help children at the practical school, the initiative that is called 'learning together with Helmond Sport', it will be something great, that will be great fun.”
