It's almost hard to believe that early last year there was an actual threat of Millwall being forced to relocate, perhaps even outside London. Now it's quite the opposite: they're still here and planning to stay put. As proven by the appointment of AFL Architects to create the concept of The Den's expansion.

AFL has quite a portfolio of stadium designs, even in London alone. Having delivered expansion of Stamford Bridge years back, they're responsible for the new Brentford stadium, currently under construction.

As of now we don't know how the stadium might grow, but that may be true for the club, too. Millwall and AFL are only about to begin consultation with relevant bodies to plan the upgrades. What's clear is that not only capacity, but commercial potential and community engagement will be among crucial issues being evaluated.

“This expansion has been a long time in the making for the club, so we are delighted that AFL have been trusted to work on what promises to be a challenging yet rewarding project. We look forward to unlocking the site and creating a development that will be sustainable far into the future.” Phil Osborne, AFL director.

Public consultation for the design will take place in August of this year, with a planning application due to be submitted at the end of 2018.
