Spain: Valencia makes third attempt at new stadium After two schemes leaving them without the desired new stadium, a third project is to be worked on. Valencia owner Peter Lim draws an inspiring, but controversial vision.

“We have to have a new stadium plan, because this one was designed 9 years ago. There are new materials, new ideas and new concepts. We want the stadium to adapt to current reality, it’s not possible to deliver a 9-year-old design”, Valencia majority shareholder Peter Lim says.

The official who acquired his shares last year assured a new stadium is one of his priorities. However, it’s unclear how would the project be carried out as analysis into the matter continue.

Lim wants a stadium that would intimidate rivals like the current Mestalla, which through extremely steep seating bowl literally mounts above players. This would indicate either a major alteration or even complete abandonment of the concrete skeleton of Nou Mestalla, works on which were halted 6 years ago.

One thing that seems certain is that Mark Fenwick would not design the new stadium. The famous architect worked on the 2006 design and then on its 2013 “economic” version. Both of which are understood to be outdated at this point.
