Serbia: Stadium atop shopping centre almost ready It already has the pitch and some seats and will be opened in early 2013, Novosti.rs inform. Looks like nothing special until one realizes it’s actually on the 4th floor of a shopping centre in Belgrade.

This unique project is under construction in central Belgrade, just 2 kilometers from the famous Marakana. Because the plot is extremely small (with just under 200m long and 100m wide), architects could only go up to fit all the various uses that were planned.

On ground level there will be supermarkets, then boutiques above and wellness centre and restaurants on the 3rd floor. There’s also room for a 1,000-car parking space on two levels and a cinema. On top of all this is the stadium and it became what makes the shopping centre unique. Austrian operator called the complex simply ‘Stadion’.

The investment is worth an estimated €50 million and will provide 800 jobs to the local community. Commercial and sports uses aren’t mixed – the stadium uses its own access and evacuation routes.

In terms of matchday experience this surely won’t be a dream-come-true for local club Vozdovac, because for economical reasons roof structure has been changed, bringing dozens of thick pillars that will obstruct the view of most spectators.

At this moment the pitch is already in place and so are most of the seats, above which roof cover is being laid. This means that the ground should be ready for opening in early 2013, most probably in springtime.
