Turgutlu Stadyumu – stadium description
How was Turgutlu Stadium built?
The new stadium in Turgutlu, a city located about 50 km east of İzmir, was constructed on the initiative of the authorities. The facility was built in the western part of the city, on the banks of the Irlamaz River, close to the old 7 Eylül Stadium, which had served the community since 1965.
The project benefited from the regulation of the Irlamaz River, carried out a few years earlier. This made it possible to develop former floodplain areas, where a training pitch complex had already been built in 2006.
The stadium was planned together with a new sports hall, and construction of both facilities began in 2013. The new hall, with a capacity of 2,500 spectators, was built at a cost of 15 million Turkish lira and opened in 2016.
Construction of the new stadium took significantly longer than expected. The pitch was laid only in 2021, at which stage the project appeared close to completion, but the facility did not reach full readiness until late 2024.
When was Turgutlu Stadium inaugurated?
The stadium hosted its first event on 27 December 2024, serving as the start and finish point for youth races held as part of the Great Atatürk Run (the main event took place in Ankara).
The true inauguration, however, came with the first match played on 26 January 2025 in the TFF 3. Lig (the fourth tier), in which Turgutluspor defeated Polatlı 1926 SK 5–2.
What does Turgutlu Stadium look like?
The stadium has a modern, football-specific character. It features compact stands surrounding the pitch, offering a capacity of 12,500 seats. The west stand, which houses boxes and essential facilities, is divided into two tiers.
The seating bowl is covered by a membrane roof. White and red panels were added to the exterior side of the roof structure, forming the façade of the building’s upper section. Moving away from the (highest) main stand, the roof gradually decreases in height.
The stadium is located in the western part of the city, near the Irlamaz River. Adjacent to it are the new sports hall (Yıldırım Beyazıt Sports Hall) and a complex of training pitches.
