Jeju World Cup Stadium – stadium description

The stadium on Jeju Island took exactly 40 months to build and was ready half a year before World Cup 2002. It played host to just three group games and the very same summer, in August 2002, typhoon destroyed part of its unique roof. Though it was designed to withstand strong winds typical to this region, faulty workmanship lead to the accident. After repairs similar problems did not occur.

Capacity for the 2002 tournament was over 42,000 thanks to temporary second tier of seating opposite the main grandstand. That was dismantled in 2003 due to lack of demand. The ground remained empty until 2006, when K-League side Bucheon FC was transferred and renamed to Jeju United, a team playing at the ground since.
