The project will enable the island to host the 2030 World Cup, but it will be much more expensive than originally anticipated.

The Cabildo’s Insular Sports Institute has invited construction companies to submit bids for the refurbishment of Estadio Gran Canaria. The deadline is July 7, and the maximum duration of the works is 36 months, so that the stadium is ready one year before the 2030 World Cup, as required by FIFA.

The construction budget stands at €174.7m. The cost will therefore be more than 70% higher than the initial estimate: in 2024, the island’s authorities approved a budget of €101m for the construction work and €6m for the design.

According to La Provincia, part of this increase is due to the fact that part of the subsoil consists of artificial fill that may not be able to support the new structure, making it necessary to implement more expensive foundation solutions. Even so, a large part of the budget shortfall will be covered by UD Las Palmas, which is contributing 60 million.

The project involves fully roofing the stadium and enveloping it in a cloud-shaped façade. Capacity will increase from 32,400 to 41,854 seats. Some renderings even suggest the possibility of installing a 360-degree videoboard, although this seems unlikely.
