Planning permission granted for the new Estadio de Gran Canaria
On Thursday, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council announced that it had granted planning approval for the renovation project of Estadio Gran Canaria. The council therefore considers that the documentation complies with city planning regulations.
This decision, which follows a review of the documents submitted by the Insular Sports Institute, is crucial for the island to host the 2030 World Cup. The stadium, which currently has around 32,400 seats, will be expanded to 41,854 (previously the authorities had mentioned 44,484), slightly above the 40,000 ‘net’ seats required by FIFA.

It will also feature a full roof and façade, which together will create a visual effect reminiscent of a cloud, hence the project’s name, La Nube
(The Cloud). According to the renderings, the refurbished home of UD Las Palmas will include a 360° video screen. All this for around €170 million, of which around 60 million will be provided by UD Las Palmas.
For the time being, however, preliminary work is still underway at the stadium. At present, this mainly involves the demolition of the East Tower, which is being dismantled piece by piece. The bulk of the work is expected to begin in late summer and continue until the summer of 2029.
