Spain: Conference League causes chaos Getafe’s Coliseum construction site It’s official: Getafe will be playing in the Conference League play-offs. The question is where they will play, as the Coliseum is currently undergoing a deep reconstruction. The club’s board considered three options, two of which would allow them to play at home. And it looks as though that’s what they will try to do.

A logistical nightmare in Getafe

Getafe’s qualification for the Conference League play-offs is a cause for celebration among the Azulones’ fans… and a headache for the club’s planners. The reason is that the Coliseum, which was already small and modest, is currently undergoing a major reconstruction, with a reduced capacity and part of the stands dismantled.

According to local media, even before securing qualification, Getafe’s board held talks with Atlético de Madrid. The aim was clear: to secure the option of playing European matches at Estadio Metropolitano. But just when it seemed everything was settled, news emerged of a change to the construction schedule that will allow them to play in the Conference League at the Coliseum.

Work on the Coliseum will continue as planned

Specifically, the aim was to halt the demolition of the Tribuna stand, in order to focus on completing the new Upper South and Upper Side stands as soon as possible. Both stands have been demolished to make way for the new structure, which already has its concrete supports in place.

However, according to Marca, the club’s management has changed its plans once again. The Tribuna stand is to be demolished. Even so, the South Stand and the Lateral Stand should be ready for the start of the season, and the North Stand by the end of the year.

Once the entire project is complete, the Getafe stadium will have a modern façade, a fully covered roof and 18,500 seats, 2,000 more than before the works. But there is still a year and a half of work to go. Right now, Getafe must focus on driving the project forward and complying with UEFA’s strict regulations, a task that is by no means easy with a stadium in the midst of construction.
