Cardiff City Stadium as the home of the Welsh national team
In recent years, Cardiff City Stadium has become the main venue for matches of the Wales national football team. The national football federation increasingly organizes international fixtures there, meaning the stadium serves not only as the home ground of Cardiff City FC but also as an important centre of Welsh football.
The Welsh national team has played numerous qualification matches and international friendlies at the stadium. The venue has hosted, among others, World Cup qualifying matches as well as other important international fixtures. As a result, Cardiff City Stadium has gained a reputation as one of the most important football venues in the country.
The Football Association of Wales also highlights the importance of the national team’s supporters, known as the Red Wall.
Federation officials want to provide them with more space in the stadium and better conditions for watching matches, which is one of the reasons behind the proposed expansion of the venue.

Modernization of Cardiff City Stadium through the expansion of two stands
According to preliminary plans, the modernization project in Cardiff would primarily involve the expansion of two opposite stands. The concept includes enlarging both ends of the stadium, which would allow the addition of thousands of new seats for supporters.
Such a solution would make it possible to increase the stadium’s capacity without the need for a complete reconstruction of the facility. The structure of Cardiff City Stadium allows for gradual expansion, meaning the project could be implemented in stages depending on the needs of both the club and the national team. After the modernization is completed, the stadium could accommodate around 45,000 spectators, which would significantly change its position among the largest football venues in the United Kingdom.
If the project is implemented, Cardiff City Stadium would surpass the capacities of several well-known Premier League stadiums. The venue in Cardiff would become larger than stadiums belonging to clubs such as Chelsea FC and Aston Villa FC. For comparison, Stamford Bridge currently holds around 40,000 spectators, while Villa Park has a capacity exceeding 42,000 seats. After expansion, the Cardiff stadium would surpass both venues and move into the group of the largest stadiums in the United Kingdom.
According to estimates, the stadium could be ranked within the second ten of the largest stadiums in the country, which would significantly increase its prestige both at club and national team level.

Importance of the stadium expansion for the club and the city
The expansion of Cardiff City Stadium would have significant importance for both the club and the city of Cardiff. A larger stadium would allow more supporters to attend major league matches as well as national team fixtures. For Cardiff City FC, increased stadium capacity would also mean higher revenues from ticket sales, food and beverage services, and hospitality areas.
In the event of a return to the Premier League, the additional seats could quickly be filled by fans and sports tourists visiting the city. At the same time, the expansion could increase Cardiff’s chances of hosting major sporting events in the future, including international matches and football tournaments.
Cardiff City aiming for a return to higher divisions
A key factor for the implementation of the investment remains the sporting situation of the club. Cardiff City FC is currently aiming to return to a higher level of competition after being relegated to EFL League One. The team is fighting for a quick return to the EFL Championship, while in the longer term the goal remains promotion back to the Premier League. The last time the club played in the top division was during the 2018/2019 season.
A return to the elite level could significantly accelerate the implementation of stadium expansion plans, as increased fan interest and higher revenues from television rights would make the investment more financially viable. For this reason, the future of Cardiff City Stadium largely depends on the club’s sporting results in the coming seasons and on the continued development of football in Wales.
