The history of the stadium in Thái Nguyên

The first stadium in Thái Nguyên was built before 1974 in the central part of the city, on a site covering approximately 3 hectares. The venue could accommodate up to 30,000 spectators and for many years served as the main sports arena of the province. During the 2001–02 season, Hanoi ACB played its home matches here in the second tier of Vietnamese football.

Over time, however, the infrastructure no longer met modern standards. Around 2022, the old stadium ceased to be used, and in 2024 it was demolished. In its place, new administrative buildings related to the provincial authorities were planned.

Thái Nguyên Stadium as part of western suburban development

The decision to build a new venue was made in 2016, when provincial authorities approved a detailed master plan for a new sports complex. The new Sân vận động Thái Nguyên was constructed on a 15.47-hectare site in Phúc Trìu commune, about 10 km west of the city centre. The investment forms part of a long-term programme for the development and urbanization of Thái Nguyên’s western suburbs. Construction began on October 1, 2022. The project, designed by the DCCD office, was fully funded from public resources. Initially estimated at over 309 billion đồng, the final cost of the investment rose to 535 billion đồng.

The official, though modest, opening ceremony took place on December 19, 2025, on National Resistance Day. A few days later, between December 21 and 27, 2025, the stadium hosted its first football event – a friendly tournament featuring four V.League 1 teams. The tournament’s inauguration had a much more elaborate setting than the stadium opening itself, including fireworks, light shows and artistic performances.

Features and architecture of Thái Nguyên Stadium

The new stadium can accommodate 22,000 spectators and is equipped with a full-size athletics track. The stands surround the pitch on all sides, but those along the longer sides are significantly taller, featuring a second tier, a roof and a decorative façade that gives the venue a more representative character.

Thái Nguyên Stadium replaced the former arena in the city centre, offering modern sports facilities that meet current standards and providing a significant boost to the region’s further development. Today, it is the largest and most modern stadium in the province, designed not only for football but also for athletics and large-scale public events.
