Spain: Barcelona defends itself against criticism after another Camp Nou fiasco "We have worked day and night" assures FC Barcelona's board, blaming the delay on complicated administrative processes. Although Laporta assures that "the stadium is now complete", he refused to give a new planned return date for the return. The opposition inside the club is growing stronger.

Internal opposition attacks

The great Barcelona will take on Valencia this Sunday at the tiny Estadi Johan Cruyff after a return to Camp Nou once again proved impossible, as did a game at Montjuic due to a Post Malone concert. The second team’s stadium can only hold 6,000 fans in the stands and is therefore the smallest venue La Liga has seen in years.

The opposition inside FC Barcelona sees the situation as a humiliation for the club and a disrespect to the tens of thousands of socios who will not be able to watch the game from the stands. The management of the return to the stadium is full of mistakes, and entrusting the works to Limak was a failure, said the leader of the Som un Clam group and one of the likely candidates for the Blaugrana's presidency in the next election, Joan Camprubí, as quoted by Sport.

You can manage the club better or worse, but fraud is unacceptable, stated Victor Font, who lost the presidential battle to Joan Laporta in 2021.

Laporta and Fort respond to the allegations

The stadium is already completed, ready for the first match. It remains for us to complete the process from an administrative and formal point of view, Laporta replied on Thursday. We will return to the Camp Nou as soon as possible, he assured, thanking the socios for their "understanding".

Elena Fort, FC Barcelona's vice-president, told RAC1 that the board had worked days and nights to return to the Camp Nou for the match against Valencia, with the reason for the setback being the complicated administrative process required to obtain permits to open the venue. She also said that she does not regret announcing that Barça would return home on August 10 in front of 60,000 fans because that was the information they received at the time, but when asked about the currently planned return date, she said she could not give it.

The closest home matches for which FC Barcelona could return to the Camp Nou are:

  • Getafe, 21 September
  • Real Sociedad, 28 September
  • PSG, 1 October

If they also fail to do so, Barcelona will return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, with the exception of the clash with Real Sociedad. On that day, there will be a pyrotechnic display of the La Mercè festival in the vicinity of the stadium, which makes it impossible to play at Montjuïc for safety reasons. Sunday's clash might not be the last Blaugrana’s league encounter at the second team’s 6,000-seater.
