Debut of the new turf
The Monterrey 2026 organizing committee showcased the 60-day overhaul of the new pitch, already used during the Apertura 2025 season by Rayados in Liga MX and Rayadas in the Liga Femenil on July 25 and 26. Taking advantage of the summer break, Estadio BBVA installed FIFA-approved grass, revamped warm-up zones on the sidelines, and created a new off-field area — all part of the World Cup upgrades.
The hybrid turf — 97% natural grass reinforced with 3% synthetic fibers — was grown in a specialized nursery in Nuevo León, then laid on a base of gravel and silica sand imported from Veracruz. The old surface was removed to a depth of 45 cm to install ventilation and drainage systems, ensuring optimal root conditions. They also introduced cutting-edge tech, including a water suction machine to prevent puddles.
This new pitch meets all FIFA standards and is designed to offer top conditions for both league matches and the World Cup. Pedro Esquivel, CF Monterrey’s CEO, confirmed that all major infrastructure — including the pitch and VIP areas — will be ready by December 2025, six months before the tournament kicks off. The club also extended its sponsorship deal with BBVA for another five years.
A stadium packed with new technology
Esquivel also revealed plans to implement a cashless system for all stadium purchases. Thanks to BBVA’s partnership, the venue will become safer for fans. While facial recognition payments aren’t legal in Mexico yet, this tech is already used in U.S. stadiums, allowing fans to pay with just their face.
The stadium is equipped with Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless tech boosting connection speed and quality. Digital tickets secured by Ticketmaster help curb scalping and speed up entry. AI supports crowd management to keep things running smoothly. For extra convenience, the Pa’ Tu Butaca
app lets fans order food delivered directly to their seats. Total investment for the World Cup preparations at Estadio BBVA stands at $7.2 million.
