USA: Costs of the new Buffalo Bills stadium keep rising If the Buffalo Bills had hoped their new stadium would open for the 2026 season, the process may take a bit longer than initially expected.

Expenses keep piling up

The New Highmark Stadium, being built next to the current venue, was originally projected to cost $1.4 billion. However, according to a report by the Erie County Stadium Development Corp., the price has now increased to $2.1 billion. Due to rising construction costs, the Bills have already begun the process of seeking NFL approval to increase their debt. The costs continue to climb, with an additional $100 million added to the previously estimated amount.

The NFL has set the maximum debt limit for clubs at $650 million, but for the Buffalo Bills, an additional $800 million raises their total obligations, leading the club to request leniency from the league. There are reasons to believe the NFL will grant this request—partly due to business considerations and partly because the league consistently works toward its objectives, efficiently resolving obstacles.

A precedent exists with the Atlanta Falcons, who received approval to increase their debt by $850 million for the construction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as well as the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, who were granted similar allowances for the development of SoFi Stadium. NFL team owners will consider the Buffalo Bills' request during the annual league meeting at the end of March.

What will the new stadium be like?

The new venue will have a capacity of 62,000 spectators, nearly 10,000 fewer than its predecessor. This will make it one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL. However, comfort and visibility will improve, and fans will have a more diverse selection of seating options. The exterior design of the stadium is expected to reflect local architectural influences.
