Mexico: Stadium of three teams may soon empty Atlante FC has already announced its move, Club América will not be able to play the final of the 2025 Apertura at its home stadium, and both the Eagles Cruz Azul are considering a change of venue. In a matter of days, Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes could go from hosting 3 clubs to being completely empty.

Atlante abandons ship first

That stadium was dead, Atlante came to give it life lambasted the owners of Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes Emilio Escalante, president of the Potros de Hierro. The executive complained that despite having invested time and money in arrangements, after the arrival of Cruz Azul and Club América "there was no longer any room for Atlante."

The club has already announced on Friday that their new home will be Estadio Agustín Coruco Díaz, but it is possible that neither the Celestes nor the Azulcremas will stay in Mexico City. Cruz Azul is considering several options, including, as reported by TUDN, moving to Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla or to Estadio La Corregidora in Querétaro.

Club América moves, but not yet sure if for good

Club América just eliminated Cruz Azul in a crazy game in the semifinal of the Apertura 2024, but the final will not be played at home. All because of a bullfight organized in the nearby Plaza de Toros. Since November, after the temporary closure of the stadium, two events can not be organized in the area on the same day. It was then that everything started to go wrong for the Ciudad de los Deportes.

Now, once qualified for the final, the Eagles will have to play it in Puebla. After the BBVA MX league authorities approved the change, Estadio Cuauhtémoc will witness the league final after 33 years, on Thursday, December 12 at 20:00 local time. Club América will face Rayados de Monterrey in the first leg, and will play as visitors in the second leg on December 16 at Estadio BBVA.

Although for now the move is for one game, Club América will have to decide whether to stay at the Ciudad de los Deportes. In the last few hours, reports have surfaced that América is negotiating to move to Puebla for the Clausura 2025, which begins in January. According to Pepe Hanan, who broke the news citing a very important source from Televisa (América's owner), the chances of the talks coming to fruition exceed 90%.

And even if the Águilas decide not to move for now from Benito Juárez, it is a matter of time before the stadium is empty once again, as both Cruz Azul and América will return to the Estadio Azteca once its remodeling is finished. In the best-case scenario, the Ciudad de los Deportes will be without a tenant in 2026. Despite the fact that changes of venue are quite frequent in Mexico, it will not be easy to find a club willing to inhabit a stadium from which there has been an exodus rarely seen in just a few weeks.
