Spain: Demolition work underway at La Romareda. Temporary stadium to be built On July 7, the day after Enrique Bunbury's concert, demolition work began at La Romareda. The completion of this project is scheduled for the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028. In the upcoming season, Real Zaragoza will continue to play at the venue, with Gol Sur being the first section to be demolished.

Major demolition

The stands consist of columns, beams, and reinforced concrete slabs, while the roof comprises beams with a metal truss, supported by pillars. The work started with the dismantling of interior elements, followed by safety measures to remove asbestos-containing components. After this, the metal roof and the concrete stands will be dismantled. Once the building is cleared from this area, excavation for the foundations and the construction of retaining walls will continue.

After three weeks of work, over 2,300 m² of fibrous cement roofing have been removed. Demolition work is also ongoing inside the building. The first building to be demolished is the former Gerencia de Urbanismo, initially intended to serve as the international press center for the 1982 World Cup and later transferred to the city.

This phase also includes the removal of the parking strip in front of Eduardo Ibarra Square, although traffic flow on public roads will remain unaffected. The entire area will be cleared and adapted to ensure safety and easy access for fans in the 2024/25 season. Meanwhile, the demolition of the El Cubo building has also begun.

What do the different stages involve?

Despite the ongoing work, La Romareda will continue to function, with at least 20,000 spectators in the stands. The first phase, which began on July 7, will last a full year. This phase is currently in the tendering stage, with a maximum budget of €5 million.

Next will be the second phase, involving the demolition and construction of the new Tribuna Este, lasting until the summer of 2026, when the third phase will commence, focusing on the construction of the new Tribuna Preferente within a year. The fourth phase will see the construction of Gol Norte, and the final phase, starting in the summer of 2028, will involve work on the roof and other essential elements.

There will be a relocation

La Nueva Romareda company has announced a tender for the assembly, operation, and dismantling of a modular stadium worth €14.3 million on the former northern Expo parking lot. The goal is for the stadium to be ready by the start of the 2025/26 season, by August 2025 at the latest, with the work lasting a maximum of 26 weeks.

This temporary stadium will accommodate 20,000 spectators until the completion of the new Romareda. It will feature four straight stands oriented north-south, including two stands behind the goals, and the east and west stands, all covered with a roof.
