2015/16 is a good season for Borussia Mönchengladbach. They may not qualify for Champions League, but Europa League participation in Autumn is almost certain. Meanwhile playing in the CL last year brought the club €30 million and helped remain among Germany’s strongest teams.
The club’s shareholders number reached the impressive level of 75,000 and continues growing, as does revenue. For the second consecutive year Borussia reported record turnover (€160 million for 2015 compared to 130m in 2014). This resulted in profit of €21 million after taxation, while last year the club earned this much before being taxed.
Stable financial growth means plans for the future remain clear: this summer a large beer garden will be created behind the Fankurve at Borussia Park, providing additional space for pre- and post-match entertainment for fans, as well as non-matchday events.
But the larger part will come next year. Later in 2016 Borussia expect to have planning permission in place for their brand new hotel (announced this time last year), to be attached to the main grandstand. If this happens, construction should begin in early 2017 and will end in the 2nd half of 2018.
The 4-star hotel will offer 6 floors and 131 rooms, with total floor space of some 15,000 square meters. Borussia themselves will have 40% of shares, while Lindner Hotels and Resorts will operate the venue with 60%. Having a hotel on site means guaranteed revenue for the operator on matchdays, while at the same time enabling increase in corporate/banqueting stadium events by 60% (from 450 to 750 per year!).
According to last year’s estimates, all investment in the club’s training academy and stadium improvements should be repaid by 2036 without straining Borussia’s annual budget throughout the period.
