Euro 2016: The largest Euro in history
Average capacity of every stadium outgrew all European Championships held in this century. Ticket number highest in history, but how does attendance look so far? Let’s see!
Portugal: Stadium crying to be filled
Even the best season of Beira-Mar wasn’t enough to fill this Euro 2004 stadium. Last campaign had an appalling average crowd of 629 people per game!
Portugal: Coimbra still trying to pay for its stadium
It’s been over 8 years since Euro 2004 ended, but Portuguese hosts from Coimbra only managed to pay for a third of their stadium. Currently almost half of the city’s debt is caused by the stadium built for UEFA’s tournament.
Their Euro: Sachiko (3)
Her heart beats for FC Tokyo, but every couple of years Sachiko books flights to experience football’s largest tournaments. Completely different experience than club football, but a very likeable one, she says.
Euro 2012: All-time attendance record confirmed!
In total, Euro 2012 games were seen by some 1,440,000 people. Even keeping in mind that some sold tickets went unused, this is a very impressive figure. Euro 1996 record has been beaten by over 200,000 people.
Euro 2012: Over 1,000,000 people – record broken, new one to come
Most previous Euro hosts have been working on results like these until semifinals or even final game. Meanwhile yesterday’s last group games brought total number of spectators to over 1 million people. Poland and Ukraine would have to witness a disaster not to set a new Euro record of attendance.
Euro 2012: Poland and Ukraine going for attendance record!
Only in the first round of the group phase 356,000 people came to 8 stadia of the tournament. That means so far attendance is highest since the introduction of individual seats and 16-team format.
Portugal: Leiria to sell temporary stand from Euro 2004
Last year in September bailiff took control over Leiria’s municipal stadium when local authorities were attempting to sell it. One part was not affected though – temporary stand used during Euro 2004, lent to nearby Olha. Now this stand will be put up for auction.
