Italy: Inter and Milan interested in buying San Siro Milan and Inter are considering purchasing the San Siro stadium or acquiring the rights to it. The idea of renovating the stadium, which is currently owned by the Municipality of Milan, is becoming increasingly likely. This would mean abandoning the plan to build new stadiums for both Inter and Milan. A meeting on this matter is scheduled for the second week of September.

A note of hope

The Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, has received information from Inter and Milan regarding the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, reads a note from Palazzo Marino (Milan City Hall). The clubs, along with their technical and legal advisors, are evaluating the technical and financial conditions, considering the possibility of purchasing the stadium or obtaining the rights to its use.

The municipal authorities and the clubs will meet in the second week of September, seemingly to work out the details. It appears that the feasibility study for renovating San Siro, conducted pro bono by WeBuild and shared with the clubs at the end of June, has been accepted by Inter and Milan. The architects proposed that the renovation work would take place mainly during the summer and, during the season, in segments, to minimize the reduction in capacity. The end result would be a modernized facility with 70,000 seats.

Will they stay home?

The political response to these reports was immediate, especially from those who have always advocated for the renovation of San Siro and opposed its demolition. Enrico Fedrighini, the environmental councilor, stated: It is time to create a public joint-stock company with a majority stake held by the Municipality of Milan and with Inter and Milan holding a 49% stake. This is the best way to manage public assets in the interest of all citizens.

Alessandro Giungi from the Democratic Party, chairman of the Olympic Committee, spoke of the positive news: For me, the goal has always been to keep both Milanese teams in their home.
