Germany: Stadium summary of Euro 2024 knockout phase 15 matches, a new attendance record and a premature final. Round of 16

By far the most interesting part of the knockout stage of Euro 2024. The most important information coming out of these matches was this: There are no more weak national teams in Europe. Although the favorites won for the most part, it was not without troubles. In particular, in the England match, where the goal that gave a draw was scored with a bicycle kick by Jude Bellingham, amazing this season. From hell to heaven went Cristiano Ronaldo, when we saw the shortest penalty kick contest in Euro history. The match between Austria and Turkey gave us the most excitement.

The round-of-16 matches, like the group stage matches, had a high audience of fans in the stadium. The highest percentages of filling the venues could be seen in Dortmund, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. All 3 matches at these venues reached a minimum of 99%! The least-watched match was the one at the AufSchalke Arena, with an attendance of the lowest, though still high, 94%. The total number of tickets sold for the Round of 16 matches was 415,964.

Quarter finals

The quarter finals could spark excitement after the first game, in which according to many, the two best and most phenomenal teams of the group stage, Germany and Spain, met. After this exciting match, it was time for a sleeper encounter - France versus Portugal. A big dose of excitement was once again given for the brave playing Turkey, which finished the tournament in style.

Have attendances at the quarter finals started to drop? On the contrary. The percentage of filling venues was not below 97.5% this time, and the arena in Hamburg was the weakest. Not counting once again the 105% in the Stuttgart stadium, another Euro record was set in the stands. Although the Olympiastadion in Berlin with its 98.7% fill rate is not very impressive, the numbers here speak volumes. The Netherlands-Turkey match was the only one to be watched by more than 70,000 spectators, and this result was even higher than the final match of this tournament. The total number of tickets sold for the quarter final matches was 218,787.

Semi finals

The last quarter final match started a series that did not end again until the end of the tournament. Each subsequent meeting ended with a score of 2:1. Both semi finals did not disappoint in terms of beautiful goals. The most special one was scored by the then 16-year-old Lamine Yamal. A powerful shot by another La Masia star, Xavi Simons, opened the second semi final, but the Dutch plans were thwarted by a joker from Gareth Southgate's deck, Ollie Watkins.

The semi finals also saw the last Der Klassiker before the new season. This time not in the German league, but at the Euros, not on the field, but in the stands. Which stadium fared better? In numbers, Munich Arena gained a small advantage. Percentage-wise, BVB Stadion Dortmund performed better. The score was 1:1. The total number of tickets sold at the semi final matches was 122,968.

Final

A decisive match, and actors from two different universes in the Berlin theater. One bored us, playing as if without ambition or desire to perform well in Europe. The other were thriller movie actors from Indiana Jones - pure offensiveness and action. The first half was probably directed by an English filmmaker, but the best was to come. Before the whistle for the second half, music from the famous thriller Requiem for a Dream was played in the stadium, and just 2 minutes later a goal was scored for the Spaniards. The English managed to recover from the loss, but it was La Furja Roja who won the title of European champion for the fourth time in history.

The attendance of the final match, unfortunately, stands apart from every other Euro 2024 match. And it's probably not because the English started leaving the stadium even before the medal ceremony of the tournament. 92.5% is by far the weakest result of the tournament, but in no way comparable to the Copa America, where such a result would have been a success in any of the available stadiums. Attendance at the final was 65,600 spectators.
