England: West Ham Fans to boycott season opener? High ticket prices a problem The inaugural Premier League match of the season between West Ham United and Aston Villa, scheduled for August 17, may face attendance issues due to controversy over ticket prices.

Huge costs

Discontent among West Ham fans regarding season ticket price increases has been growing for some time. The situation worsened with the removal of discounted prices for new season tickets, making match attendance more expensive for families. Adding fuel to the fire, the club's decision to classify the match against Aston Villa as a Category A event, with ticket prices ranging from £45 to £105, has infuriated fans.

This move contradicts West Ham's recent statement, which assured fans of their commitment to affordable family football. Hammers United, a fan group, calculated that a family of four would pay £280 for Band Four seats for the season's first match. This does not include additional costs for travel, merchandise, and food.

Empty stands?

The combination of high prices and lack of family-friendly ticket options has led to threats of a boycott from fans. Many are considering watching the game on television instead of attending London Stadium. A half-empty stadium for the season opener would send a negative signal to West Ham, the Premier League, and new manager Julen Lopetegui.
