Italy: Is San Siro renovation getting closer? In recent days, there has been a meeting between the mayor of Milan and representatives of Inter and Milan, as well as the CEO of the WeBuild company. It focused on the renovation of San Siro. The city's leader stated after the meeting that "the atmosphere is positive" and that they are "optimistic." What has been agreed upon?

First project established

WeBuild presented their stadium construction project with the obligation to present a feasibility study by June. However, both teams will soon present their vision for the renovation of San Siro along with the necessary infrastructure, according to them. This includes VIP areas, service and accessibility improvements, as well as external services such as commercial areas and lounges. All external aspects of the stadium must comply with current standards. It is necessary to demonstrate that the renovation will be economically sustainable.

The clubs understand that there is no good time to significantly raise prices for regular tickets. According to the mayor, revenue can be increased in two ways: through VIP areas where companies can pay for individual services at much higher prices, and secondly, through the idea of having fans arrive at the stadium long before the match and enjoy the place for several hours, from lunch through shopping to museum visits. Therefore, a high-quality museum is currently necessary.

Close to agreement?

Both teams already have initial analyses and will present them, trying to combine the needs of Inter and Milan, which cannot be too far apart on this issue. The atmosphere around the table is positive, the teams are interested in this option, and we are approaching a key moment, said Mayor Giuseppe Sala quoted by urbanlife.org. It is clear that I do not expect the teams to slow down with alternative projects; I cannot ask for that because it would not make sense, he added.

Regarding Meazza Stadium, there are still two issues to resolve. The first concerns the ownership of the stadium, which is currently in the hands of the municipality, but for the renovation to proceed, it is necessary for it to become the property of the teams. This can be achieved through the immediate and permanent transfer or rights to the land, which would allow the teams to obtain ownership at the end of the process while also enabling them to register the stadium as their own property immediately.

When will construction begin?

It is not yet known whether work can begin before or after the Winter Olympic Games 2026, but one hypothesis suggests starting construction as early as next summer, excluding already planned concerts. I understand that concert organizers are worried. However, let it be clear that a well-executed renovation is also in the interest of concert organizers. I cannot say whether we will start before or after the Olympic Games; I believe work should start earlier, said the mayor.
