France: Bordeaux's historic stadium faces structural challenges A structural weakness has been identified in the north arch of the iconic Art Deco style stadium in Bordeaux that could disrupt the venue's centenary celebrations in 2024. The stadium, which has been a historic monument since 2022, is undergoing a crucial phase of conservation.

Structural problems detected at historic Bordeaux stadium

In a worrying situation for Union Bordeaux-Bègles fans is Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, which is due to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. The defect located at the top of the northern arch requires immediate attention. Vigilant monitoring of the city over the past three years, including a comprehensive heritage audit and maintenance programme, has played a key role in uncovering the problem. The weakness, mainly in the structure and foundations, highlights the need for urgent remedial action.

A specialised company recommended restricting access to the area. In response, the municipality has announced that the section at risk will be closed and not used until the strengthening work is completed. This precaution, although necessary, will affect several upcoming events, including the UBB-Perpignan rugby matches. Even if fans don't manage to see the match from the stands, they will be able to benefit from online bets, and enjoy equally good entertainment.

Consequences for the stadium

The closure affects around 3,400 seats, starting with the UBB-Perpignan match on 25 November. Season ticket holders and ticket holders in the affected area were advised to visit the ticket offices at Boulevard du Maréchal-Leclerc - Arche de Chaban to secure alternative seating. They were to be moved to the upper south arch, while single ticket purchasers were moved to the lower sections of the north and south arches.

Built in 1924, with the current structure inaugurated for the 1938 World Cup, the stadium holds a special place in Bordeaux's heritage. Owned by the city, it has seen significant investment to preserve its historical and architectural integrity. More than €2 million has been allocated in 2022 and 2023 alone to address issues such as concrete treatment and waterproofing. Recent upgrades include new screens and new turf laid in the summer of 2023. In addition, plans are underway to improve the stadium's accessibility and repainting, so that the facility will age with dignity.
