Austria: Intensive search for the location of the new Grazer AK stadium Graz is still searching for a suitable destination for the new GAK stadium. After the expansion of the previous site in Weinzödl proved impossible, four potential locations in the south of Graz will now be examined, announced Mayor Elke Kahr's office recently.

Discontent among members of the stadium committee

Potential locations need to be examined for feasibility, spatial planning requirements, general conditions, traffic development, and suitability. Leading this initiative is the Stadionausschuss, i.e. stadium committee, chaired by Michael Ehmann (SP). The committee emphasizes the importance of a thorough analysis and the preparation of decision-ready documents before further actions are taken.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for February or March 2024. However, not everything is going smoothly in the efforts to build a new stadium. Representatives of the city parties ÖVP and KFG have withdrawn from the committee, expressing their dissatisfaction with slow progress and the cancellation of the academy projects of Sturm and Grazer.

New stadium for GAK a chance for Sturm

Grazer has abandoned its insistence on a location in the northern part of the city, opening the door for the local rival, Sturm Graz, to acquire the currently shared Merkur Arena stadium. The vice-champion of Austria and cup winner has long struggled with an unfavorable situation regarding its home venue. Acquiring the stadium would allow them full rights to use and market it, potentially leveling the playing field.
