England: Talks begin on new Oxford United stadium Oxfordshire County Council has authorised its officials to enter into negotiations with the League One football club's over the general legal and commercial terms associated with Oxford United proposal to lease a site for a new stadium. The land in question is known as "the triangle", and is located north from the city boundaries.

Oxford United currently play in the third division of English football (League One). Since 2001, their home has been Kassam Stadium, which they only lease. The deal with the venue's owner, one of Kassam's Firoka Group companies, expires in 2026, so the club has started thinking about its future venue.

The U’s long-term plans include building a stadium with a capacity of 18,000, although this is still a long way off. Club officials have spent the last four years looking at potential sites for a new facility and have finally been able to select one that will allow the "Boys from Up the Hill" to thrive. Thanks to the stadium investment, perhaps they will soon be able to move up the leagues and play against truly quality opponents. Until that happens local fans can indulge themselves in football betting.

The decision by Oxfordshire County Council to start the talks with the club about the lease of land for the new venue was made on 24 January. It comes after United called on the Council to provide progress and clarity on the project once it emerged that officers had been recommended to authorise the start of talks.

Following the aforementioned meeting, the Council said talks to secure information and commitments that meet its objectives would continue. Any final decision on the site lease will be made publicly at a future cabinet meeting, on the basis whether the Council's objectives have been met.

The site of interest to the club is known as "the triangle". United has so far provided the council with information in line with the first stage of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) pathway for developing proposals (Stage 0).

The councillors said the site has the advantage of proximity to Oxford Parkway railway station and park and ride services, but added that they "remain mindful" that, like the previously proposed site at Stratfield Brake, it is within the green belt.

The cabinet decision requires any legal agreement with the club to be in line with the Council's strategic priorities by achieving seven land use objectives, which include maintaining the green barrier between Oxford and Kidlington, improving access to nature and green spaces and improving facilities for local sports groups and ongoing financial support.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Calum Miller stated: Oxford United is close to the hearts of thousands of people across this County. We understand how strongly supporters wish to see the club secure a new and enduring home. We will work constructively and openly with the club to help them achieve a long-term home in the County and a sustainable future.
