Kansas City Current was formed in late 2020. However, this is not the beginning of the history of professional women's soccer in this city. Until 2017, there was a team called FC Kansas City, which twice reached the NWSL in 2014 and 2015. In the end, the city lying by the Missouri River disappeared from the map of the National Women's Soccer League for only 3 years.
Since returning home, the team has shared Children's Mercy Park with Sporting Kansas City which plays in MLS. However, Current owners’ ways of thinking are far-reaching. The facility where they will be exclusive users will ensure that they will not be forced to negotiate with anyone regarding the dates of arena reservations as it was in the past. They also expect an increase in revenues due to the rental of real estate for mass and special events.
In early October 2022, after the announcement of plans for the stadium, owners managed to obtain all the necessary permits and start construction. Land has been obtained from the port of Kansas City under a fifty-year lease agreement. Port has leased a seven acres lot in the northeast of the city. The final cost of the entire operation will be $117 million. It is worth mentioning that the project is fully financed from private funds.
As part of its implementation, a modern facility with 11,500 seats will be created only for women's soccer. The building is also designed for commercial use. Fact that it’s located near the Berkley Riverfront Park makes it more appealing. KC Current Stadium will be the centerpiece of the revitalized Port Kansas waterfront. The city authorities do not hide that they are trying to make this area have unique recreational qualities. The arena is expected to be put into service by the end of 2023. If all goes according to plan, the players will be able to use the new home from the start of the 2024 season.
