Just two hours ago the Opole city hall hosted the selection ceremony for the design of new municipal stadium. With as many as 11 bids qualifying for final evaluation the ceremony took place a month later than previously anticipated. Finally now we know the outcome.

Stadion Miejski w Opolu

Stadion Miejski w OpoluThe winning design by 90 Architekci (Warsaw) and GMT (Mysłowice) creates a clear and strong landmark with very simple means. Robust frame of the roof created sharp edges, while undulated white membrane opens the stadium up and invites fans inside, while adding dynamism to the otherwise sedate form.

Four smooth arched openings make it recognisable from afar, also providing shelter to arriving fans and facilitating illumination of the entire stadium.

The new stadium in Opole will hold 12,000 people in a uniform, 18-row auditorium. Elevated front row should ensure optimal sightlines. At the same time is adds floor space behind the stands as toilets and catering facilities are pushed underneath the stands.

The winning company receives an award of PLN 55,000 and will now be invited to prepare the final documentation, based on which the structure will be built. The city has PLN 3 million saved for design works.

Should the design be complete in the regular time of 12 months, we could see groundbreaking in late 2019.

The stadium for 2nd-league Odra Opole will be built independently of the old Oleska St. stadium, in the north-western outskirts of Opole, where the city is currently growing rapidly.
